Cotylorhynchus is one of the earliest examples of gigantism in Synapsids being of a massive size as a genus, with this size peaking in Cotylorhynchus hancocki. At a staggering 1.5 tonnes it is by far the heaviest known Synapsid of its time, yet despite this great size it has one crippling downside, it cannot reach the ground with its head. Indicating this animal was either very specialised in what it ate on land or, more likely due to its teeth, it was a specialised semi-aquatic grazer.
